Preschool Practice Bus Ride

Utica Community School’s preschool students are getting ready to make the transition to Kindergarten in the fall.  This is an exciting time for these 4 and 5 year old children, however, they will experience many new things in elementary school that were not a regular part of the their preschool day.  To help prepare our future kindergartners for this transition, we practice many skills throughout the year to help build cognitive,  social-emotional, language and physical development.

In addition, all of our preschool students are invited to explore elementary routines by participating in a cafeteria lunch and a school bus ride.  These are two very exciting events for our preschoolers.  For many of our students, this is their first experience eating a meal without a parent or caregiver, so it is very important that they feel comfortable and capable with the lunch routine.  The bus ride may also be a first for most preschool students.   Teachers and bus drivers take the time to explain bus safety rules and expectations to the students in age appropriate ways.  Lack of seatbelts on school busses is always a significant point of interest to our students, as most have never ridden in a vehicle without a car seat or seatbelt.  Students practice getting on and off the bus, sitting appropriately and paying attention to when it’s time to get off.  Students leave preschool feeling confident and ready to start Kindergarten thanks to experiences like these and our wonderful UCS teachers, administrators, transportation and food service staff.

For those families that may feel their preschooler is ready for Kindergarten, but could use a little extra help over the summer, UCS offers Kindergarten Readiness classes.  These classes are a unique combination of learning and fun that gives students extra practice in core curriculum areas.   Children enrolling in Kindergarten Readiness classes must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2018 or attending Kindergarten during the 2018-19 School Year.   You can register for Kindergarten Readiness classes by calling 586-797-6900 or visiting our Enrichment website at:
