The Utica Community Schools Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) has earned an A+.

In a recent annual review by the Macomb Intermediate School District, the UCS program earned perfect scores in ten categories related to parent partnerships, curriculum, staff selection and development and communication.

“GRSP and all of our preschool programs give students a strong foundation that promote success when they enter Utica Community Schools award winning early elementary program,” said Community Education Director Denise Mennucci.  “Our preschool students develop a love of learning in a safe and nurturing environment.”

GRSP is a free, high quality preschool program that serves four-year olds who may need additional support prior to kindergarten.

In Michigan, GSRP was introduced in 1985 and has served more than 500,000 since its inception. Research has shown that students enrolled in the GSRP achieved at higher levels and had improved graduation rates.

UCS has had the GSRP program for more than 20 years. The program was significantly expanded through a state grant four years ago to its current level of 224 students.

The district offers full and part day classes at six different locations. All lead teachers have a bachelor's degree or higher in a child development field and staff members receive at least 24 hours of professional development each year.

Communication with GRSP families is important throughout the entire school year. Parents cite the program for inspiring a love of school in their children.

“His teachers really interact with all of the children, and my son loves school,” said one parent.
